Cabral passes 900 points in Blast 18-16 OT Win Over La RaZa

03/01/2009 7:49 AM -
The first-place Baltimore Blast defeated the Monterrey La RaZa, 18-16 in overtime, Sunday night at the Monterrey Arena.  Rookie Pat Healey scored the game-winning goal and all-time leading scorer Denison Cabral scored an early goal to surpass the 900-point mark of his career.

Cabral gave Baltimore an early 2-0 lead at the 1:02 mark of the match.  The goal gave Cabral 901 points in his career and made him just the third player in franchise history to hit the 900-point mark in his career (and the first player to record all 900 points while playing for Baltimore).  Cabral is Baltimore's all-time leader in points, goals, two-point goals, one-point goals, power-play goals and game-winning goals.  He ranks second all-time in assists.

Scott Buete, who assisted Cabral's early goal, scored in the sixth minute to extend Baltimore's lead to 4-0 before Victor Quiroz scored for La RaZa to make it 4-2.  Healey added a third Blast goal to give Baltimore a 6-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Byron Alvarez cut Baltimore's lead to 6-4 early in the second quarter but Matt Watson scored twice for the Blast to make it 10-4 at halftime.

Monterrey dominated the third quarter, scoring three goals and tying the game at 10-10.  Mariano Bollella scored the first of the three goals and Mark Ughy scored the next two.

The teams traded goals in the final quarter with Monterrey taking a 16-14 lead in the eighth minute and PJ Wakefield tying the game with just 24 seconds remaining to send the match into overtime.  Mike Lookingland scored early in the quarter to regain the Blast lead, this time at 12-10, before Genoni Martinez scored to tie it at 12-12.  Carlos Garcia put the Blast back on top, 14-12, less than two minutes before Jose Birche and then Bollella scored to give La RaZa their first lead of the game, 16-14.

Healey scored the game-winner at the 4:25 mark of overtime to win the game and give Baltimore an 11-2 record.

* The Blast had not played an overtime match in two years (a 10-8 win over Philadelphia on March 2, 2007).
* Veteran defenders Billy Nelson and Wakefield played in milestone games; Nelson in his 250th career game and Wakefield in his 200th game.

With just five games remaining in the 2008-09 NISL regular season, the Blast is battling for the all-important home-field advantage in the Championship match.  The Blast , 11-2 on the season, will return to 1st Mariner Arena this weekend to host La RaZa on Friday the 6th and the KiXX on Saturday the 7th.  Tickets for the three remaining home games are available by callig 410-73-BLAST, 410-547-SEAT or online at
